Tokyo book launch:
21 March 2011.

Well, we actually did go through with it - just 2 weeks after the huge earthquake and tsunami here.

These were (and in a sense still are) strange times here in Japan, for all too obvious reasons - and sometimes it feels like we’ve been collectively treading water awaiting the next Big Thing to transpire.

At the time of the launch the nuclear reactors in Fukushima (230 km north-east of Tokyo) were still belching scary looking clouds, we had a tap-water scare, power blackouts, food shortages, and we were getting shaken by dozens of aftershocks everyday.

But the launch party was bloody brilliant anyway, and went right through from 6:00pm to 6:30am.

Aside from the novel launch per se, we had screenings of The Maltese Falcon and The Third Man interspersed with anime gems like Tokyo Marble Chocolate and Mamoru Oshii's Tachiguish-Retsuden; heck, we even showed The Karate Kid.

And the music - from DJ Wada (Co-Fusion), Ko Kimura, Jin Hiyama, Eri Makino, Cut Bit Motorz, Toshiyuki Yasuda, Devin Wine and Paul McQuade - was sublime.

I guess my own hack set wasn't too shabby either. The VB was rather nice too.
